Glossier Skywash: The Review

This our our unfiltered review of Glossier Skywash.

You know when Glossier releases a new product, there’s always a lot of hype. I’ve been a longtime fan of the brand, so when I saw the the latest product, Glossier Skywash, was launching, I knew I had to try it. Glossier describes its new Skywash eye shadow as “A soft wash of matte color for eyes. Liquid-to-powder eyeshadow that gives a diffused, soft effect.”

Glossier Skywash comes in six different shades, all inspired by Southwestern landscapes. Pebble, Echo, Terra, Valley and Palm are all variations of warmed up, brown and taupe neutrals. While Pool and Lawn are the two more vibrant, cooler hues of the bunch.

One thing I really appreciate about Glossier, as someone who tries every new makeup launch under the sun, is the brand’s unique approach to color. When Glossier actually does do makeup, I personally find that the shades are slightly different than what you might normally find elsewhere on the market. Take, for example, the Colorslide eye pencil. I’m particularly obsessed with the bright and deep mustard color dubbed Nectar. I haven’t personally seen any other eyeliner in this shade that performs as well as this one. The vivid magenta Critical Mass and deep, gingery orange Jumbo also stand out for the same reason.

That same approach to color is what original drew me to Glossier Skywash. I was immediately drawn to Pool and Lawn, as I’m less of a neutral girl and more obsessed with color. I was really interested in the idea of a sheer wash of cool color – the effect, shown in Glossier’s imagery and on Instagram seemed to resemble a similar texture of what you might see from a watercolor painting. The blue, in particular, reminded me of pale blue eyeshadows worn by ’60s movie stars. Or as seen in vintage inspired movies such as The Love Witch.

Upon first application, I noticed the formula is extremely sheer, with almost a slightly watery consistency. Glossier suggests applying Skywash with the applicator, and then dabbing it in with your fingertip. The result is a powdery texture that lasts all day.

What I discovered when I dabbed the product with my fingertip is that it really makes it incredibly sheer. Almost too much — it’s as if the product is barely visible. It that’s the look you’re going for, that’s great. It’s almost like a barely-there flash of color that makes you do a double take. It looks great in Pool. In Lawn, I found that when I sheered out the product, it turned out to look a bit more yellow, with an almost bruise-like effect.

Luckily, there’s more than one way to wear Skywash. After experimenting, I decided I love the effect of applying the product with the applicator and only using the applicator to even it out. I applied out three coats all over my lids. The effect was still matte, sheer and watercolor-like, just more pigmented. It’s more of a makeup look, versus sheering out the product is a more skin to Glossier’s signature no-makeup makeup look.

The tube is extremely lightweight – so much so – that I was a bit surprised at first. There is 0.11 fl oz of product, whereas Glossier’s other liquid shadow, Lidstar, which retails for the same price ($18) has 0.15 fl oz. That’s about a third less. Even so, the matte texture and watercolor effect is enough to make me want to try more colors. Next up, I want to try Pebble, a pink-y gray taupe with purple undertones.
